Flawless pitch, choral tones, flipped ‘Rs,’ engaging solos, and overlapping rhythms. Each voice caresses the melody and descants of the final numbers, choosing each note with precision. Each face lights up as they enjoy the lyrics flowing off of their tongues. These words describe the performance of Vocal Ensemble, Chamber Singers, and Titan Men in Olympus High’s Holiday Spectacular.
Each year before Christmas, the Vocal Music department puts on a performance showcasing their traveling show and various other numbers entwined in a Christmas skit inspiring Christmas spirit. This year the Theme of the concert was “Just Believe!” Coach Whitehead acted as a Scrooge character, while Angel Rachel, played by Rachel Heath, reviewed his life and finally brought Coach Whitehead to believe in the spirit of Christmas. James Whitehead played young Coach Whitehead, Logan Mathie played high school and college Whitehead, Brianna Meikle played Julie Whitehead, and Mimi Nelson played the Candle Girl.
The performance began with the “Christmas Collage.” The Ensemble members each auditioned various solos, duets, and group numbers to fill spots to highlight their voices and talent. Some of the students arranged their own songs with harmonies. Numbers ranged from “O Holy Night” to “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas.” Some of the highlight pieces throughout the show included: an a capella performance of “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” with dancers ‘en pointe,’ “Hot Chocolate” complete with a tap dancer, Beach Boys’ “Little St. Nick,” “Chestnuts,” “Wassail,” “Jazz Carol,” “Worship the King,” and “I Saw Three Ships.” The performance concluded with “Believe” from The Polar Express.
Now, the Vocal Ensemble will take their traveling show to various Christmas parties for churches and families. They will be joined by Chamber Singers and Titan Men for performances at elementary schools. Some of the singers in this group recently performed at This is the Place State Park. The performers, especially Vocal Ensemble are delighted to spread the Christmas spirit and share their talents with others. “Just Believe!” and have happy holidays!
